What is Bwiti?

Updated: May 3, 2022

Bwiti is not a religion. It is a tradition; a spiritual path of self-discovery. Bwiti is simply the study of life itself, and through that study, a mastery in the art of living. As we negotiate this life, we have opportunities to learn about life, itself. The spirit, Iboga, is our teacher.

Thousands of years in the past, the Pygmies of Central Africa came into contact with the spirit of Iboga. Iboga taught the ancients that they could heal their bodies, heal their spirits, and embark on a journey of spiritual discovery, simply by consuming the root of the Iboga plant. As the ancient people began to explore themselves through the wisdom of Iboga, their understanding of all life was confirmed. It was through Iboga's teaching that the Bwiti shamanic traditions of healing, including through the use of medicinal plants, matured.

Bwiti use Iboga as a tool, to connect to spirit and to innate truth. The medicine uncovers and accesses this truth that lies within each of us. This truth is foundational and simple: the Creator provides us with everything that we need, and placed the ultimate understanding of this truth deep within each of us; within our souls.
